Although I haven’t been chalk painting for years and years, I do have experience using many different brands. Let me just say and confirm what everyone knows … Nothing will ever be as top of the line and flawlessly exceptional as Annie Sloan … but at the same time, not everyone can afford the Porsche of all chalk paints.
After using Valspar for project after project I decided to change it up a few months ago while at Home Depot and give Behr a shot … and I have yet to be disappointed with it … especially the price ya’ll. Priced about $20 per quart (Jacksonville, FL price), it’s considerably less than the competition but has not left me feeling cheated at all!
Behr Pros:
- Behr offers 45 color selections, about the same as my former go to – Valspar – which offers 40. But the major difference is the color options themselves. Behr has, IMHO, a better selection of colors. Valspar may have gone too creative and crazy with their colors for my liking.
- The consistency of Behr is not too thick but still offers great coverage.
- No odor and super easy to apply!
- Little to no prep work, no sanding, no priming!! YES! Just a good cleaning of the furniture (I use Simple Green or a 50/50 mix of vinegar & water) Disclaimer: If you have a high glossy finish you are covering up, I do suggest sanding and maybe even a primer coat. Chipping and rusty finishes need a good sanding.
- I don’t paint with a fancy brush. I’m actually a Purdy angled brush user and it’s my go to brush for painting. I do, however, apply my wax finish with a round chalk paint brush.
- Speaking of wax – the Behr clear wax is my favorite! A little goes a long way and creates an even, light shine finish.
